Third International Conference “Computational Linguistics in Bulgaria”

The conference will be opened with a lecture by prof. Ruslan Mitkov, one of the first Bulgarian computational linguists and head of the Computational Linguistics Research Group at the University of Wolverhampton, UK, who will present language technologies oriented towards e-learning, written and oral translations and assistance to people with language difficulties. Dr. Sujit Ravi, senior researcher and manager at Google, will showcase innovative developments in the field of automated answering of electronic messages, automatic image recognition, etc. Dr. Zornica Kozareva, Google manager and Laureate of the 2016 John Atanassoff Award for achievements in computational linguistics, will introduce the audience to intelligent interactive assistants that assist the communication between a person and a computer.

Two lectures will outline another modern trend in the field of computational linguistics, namely the development of language skills. Prof. Vito Pirelli from the Institute of Computational Linguistics “A. Zampoli” in Rome will present the application of natural language processing methods when assessing reading skills. Prof. Mila Dimitrova-Valchanova and Professor Valentin Valchanov of the Norwegian Institute of Technology in Trondheim will show the peculiarities of metaphorical language in the context of individual language development and the computers’ understanding of human language.

The main program will include presentations on the achievements of researchers from Bulgaria, Russia, Serbia, Romania, Japan, Ukraine, Norway. A special research session is dedicated to lexical-semantic networks and ontologies. The programme of the conference is available here.

The Conference is organised by the Department of Computational Linguistics at the Institute for Bulgarian Language, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
