The Department of Computational Linguistics with the Institute for Bulgarian Language was founded in 1994 by Professor Yordan Penchev Penchev under its previous name Department of Computer Modelling of Bulgarian.
Since then the Department has established itself as a leading centre for computational linguistics and NLP in Bulgaria. The DCL team deal with theoretical problems of the formal description of natural language, as well as with the development of various-purpose computer applications. The Department’s achievements have won it great recognition in the international computational linguistics community as evidenced by the numerous international research projects in which the DCL researchers take part.
In 2004, the Department of Computer Modelling of Bulgarian was renamed Department of Computational Linguistics.
